Choosing a stone
Once you have arranged a burial plot, you will be able to choose a memorial suitable for your needs and the size of plot you have chosen.
We have a wide range of memorials in a variety of colours and sizes in our newly renovated showroom, situated beside Dundonald Cemetery.
Please feel free to come in and see us with no appointment needed so we can help you choose a memorial that is both fitting to your needs and meets your local cemetery's regulations. We are also able to arrange out of hours appointments should you require one.
Arranging installation
Depending on the memorial you choose and the cemetery in which it’s going, it can take several weeks for plans to be passed, foundations to be poured and your stone to be engraved.
Kirkwoods Monumental Sculptors will advise you when your stone should be completed and keep you updated throughout the process.
Choosing an inscription
We will assist you in choosing a suitable inscription for your chosen memorial. We can show you examples of styles of lettering, colours that work well on your chosen stone and provide suggestions for inscriptions if you wish.
Popular choices include poetry, famous quotes and song lyrics.
Maintenance of your memorial
Once your memorial is erected you should take care of it to ensure it remains in good condition for many years to come. We will advise you on the best methods for cleaning and caring for your memorial. Often, general upkeep of the plot on which the memorial rests is handled by the cemetery.
We also provide a restoration and cleaning service should your memorial need any work.
Additional inscriptions and items
After we inspect your chosen memorial stone, we will prepare a quotation for the proposed lettering. We can match all types of lettering from old hand carved to modern computer-generated lettering.
We also offer traditional raised lead lettering and lead on marble lettering, which we often use for restorative work. Lettering on marble is matched by our tradesmen and then cut traditionally with hammer and chisel, then leaded or painted depending on the original lettering.
Families often include words from literature, sentimental verses and scripture on the memorials to make that personal connection. We have many sample suggestions for wording in our show room for you to look through.
In addition, we can provide extra items you may wish to display alongside the monument, such as coloured stone chippings or stone flowers.
